![]() I should be able to tag photos with this software, and these tags should be synced with the server from time to time. Ideally, this management software builds a local thumbnail database so I can easily browse my library, even when not connected remotely. What I would like is to also view these photos on my Mac with a photo management software (for instance Digikam). I've been researching a lot on how to create a perfect situation to view these photos and find the best ones back easily. On this installation I keep all my photos, all neatly organized. However, I think I may have found a nice solution to my problem and I must say that Piwigo so far works very well.I run Ubuntu on my NUC. It seems this is possible, but not straightforward. This would allow other users to contribute to tagging the photos like it was Facebook and then I could rsync the pictures back to my local computer to update the new tags. What would be great is if Piwigo could also embed IPTC tags in the files. I'd much rather have my tags in the files themselves. If anything goes wrong you'll end up having to retag everything, whcih is a total nightmare. Of course you could also do the tagging in Piwigo from the beginning, but I really dislike having all that information on an SQL data base. This allows you to search through all your pictures using the predefined tags! You can now easily create virtual albums and share them. Once you have that in the config file, you can synchronize the metadata of your albums and BAM, now Piwigo includes all those tags you embedded in your JPEGs. There are other code snippets I found on the forum, but newer Piwigo versions spit out an SQL warning and the tags don't get synced. You'll need to enable the LocalConfiguration editor plugin, or if you know what you're doing just edit it drectly with vim/emacs: $conf = true What you need to do is add some PHP code in your local configuration file. A lot of the good documentation is in French though, and it took me quite a while to get it to work properly. I've discovered it's possible to make Piwigo use the IPTC tags in the file metadata as keywords! This is almos exactly what I wanted and I'm very pleased to have gotten it to work on a test album I have. This has the added advantage that I don't need to include everything I have in Piwigo, I can just link albums one at a time, excluding what I don't care to share. Instead of the double copies I was concerned with, it's possible to point Piwigo to the back up directories via symbolic link in /piwigo/galleries. The remote server will also have Piwigo installed on it. As far as files go the remote server at this point is nothing but a remote back up system (and you guys all back up your pictures. We will then rsync our photos onto the remote server, each in our own directory. This is a great thing to do anyway, because it makes your photos easily searchable accross different systems. The important step here is to make sure DigiKam (or whatever) embeds IPTC metadata into the JPEG files. We'll both sort and tag them on our own, probably with some pre established tags we can agree on. ![]() I'll be taking my own pictures, my sister will be taking her own. ![]() No replies so far, but I did get an upvote so that's enough motivation for me to share the plan I've come up with so far: I hope my topic still falls within the scope of this subreddit, I realize it's not quite photography as much as what to do with it afterwards. Is there any established way to interface Digikam with photo hosting software? Any ideas from people who've been in a similar situation would be great. Surely there are redditors here who host their own pictures. I know there's an option in Digikam to export to Piwigo, but that would mean we'd have two copies of every picture we want to share on the server, which seems rather silly and would be a waste of storage space. I see projects such as Piwigo or Lychee that seem to provide the web interface I want, but as far as I can tell they have they're own organizational system and I don't want them to interfere with Digikam. Everything up to here seems like it should be straightforward, but the sharing part is where I get a bit lost. We'll be mounting the remote drive on our computers and point Digikam to it so we can add, edit and tag all the pictures collaboratively. The goal is to have a common repository where we both put our photos, such as the web server I already have. We've both been a bit messy organizing our files, but after looking into Digikam (we're photo noobs) it seems like getting our photos under control will be doable thanks to tags and all that Digikam jazz. After talking about it for quite a while, my sister and I have finally decided to combine our photo collection and are trying to come up with a good way to share some of our collection. ![]()
